Electrical Bearing Protection Q&A - Part 28

Q1.  Is your conductive epoxy removable, if it's used in place of Loctite or other threadlock?

A1.  It can be removed, but it's difficult. If you use it to secure bolts in place, it might be easier just to drill new bolt holes rotated from the original holes.

But you don't usually need any adhesive on the screws when mounting a grounding ring. The exception is very high-vibration environments.  For instance, if you're putting a grounding ring on a traction motor in a locomotive, you might want to use conductive epoxy.

Q2.  How would you apply, or reapply, colloidal silver paint to the motor shaft in an existing installation?

A2. The colloidal silver needs to be under the AEGIS ring's microfibers, so you'll need to remove the ring.

When you do this, it's important to note the orientation of the ring so you can put it back the same way. Mark it with a marker, say at 12:00, before you remove it. Then after it's off, clean the shaft and scrub it with Emery cloth. Brush on the silver paint, and after it's dry, replace the ring in the same orientation as before.

Q3.  When you mount an AEGIS ring with conductive epoxy, do you need contact over the whole back surface of the ring, or will a few spots suffice?  This is for a retrofit.

A3. You do want as much surface area adhering as you can get, just to hold it in place.epoxy-ukit

With that said, uKITs do work when attached to the motor with conductive epoxy. So you could probably get away with just a few spots of epoxy distributed around the ring. But you want to ensure the ring is flat against the motor face and can't twist at all. Then, as always, check the shaft-to-frame electrical continuity.

AEGIS Shaft Grounding Rings have a 2-year extended warranty against bearing fluting damage. No other form of shaft grounding offers a warranty like this.
